Montreal inked thirdbaseman George Brett to a 3 year deal. Brett's deal includes 7.3 million the first year and 6.5 for the next two. "It's certainly great to be here", the thirdbaseman was quoted as saying. "Anytime you're given a chance to go to a team that is playoff proven, and wants to win a world series... how can you refuse".

The move made the current thirdbaseman Tim Wallach instantly accessible. "Needless to say it was a bit of a surprise", Wallach stated. Although the team won the NL pennant it still found it hard to convince qite a few players that this was "the place to be". Being a small market club will do that. The lineup remains intact, but the all important bench is slow coming.

Phil Plantier's upcoming season looks very promising. The former LF/RF backup looks to supplant Andre Dawson in rightfield. The one dimensional Dawson will be asked to learn leftfield when spring training begins, and comes in as the backup to Plantier.

CF- Gary Pettis a solid defender signed a 1 year deal to backup Brett Butler. Pettis has ++ speed so he'll likely see a role as a pinch runner as well. 2B/3B- Randy Ready will backup Pena and Wallach.

Overall the bench including the re-signing of firstbaseman Andres Gallaraga
comes into spring a little weaker than last season, but just a tad. With a few more days left of free agency we'll see what else may transpire.

Players in the News

Sunday, November 12th, 1989

So far this off season has been a good one.
